Greg Gottlieb is an Australian double bassist, whose growing demand on the original jazz and world music scenes in Europe and beyond, is testament to his talent and versatility.
Based in London since 2010 (and putting down musical roots in Berlin since 2016), he regularly performs with local and international artists. Some of his most recent invitations include UK tours with: Russian-born, US-based trumpeter, Valery Ponomarev (of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers fame); Australian cabaret star Melissa Western; and Oregon-based Trio Subtonic, who have recently signed to Ropeadope Records (Snarky Puppy, Christian Scott, and Dirty Dozen Brass Band, among many others).
As well as playing in legacy vintage swing bands, Greg has performed in an Oscar-winning film (The Theory of Everything, 2015) and a forthcoming Paramount Pictures feature (Allied, Nov 2016) starring Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard. He also composes for film and theatre, including Glass Eye Theatre’s No Man’s Land (2014).
Greg’s passion for playing new, original music means he’s also a founding member of several up-and-coming world-fusion groups, including Bahla, Caravela, and Telajeta. Based in London, these groups are receiving prime coverage on broadcasters such as BBC3, and even support from the Venezuelan Embassy in London. Find out more about these projects, here.
He has also curated, directed and tutored at a number of jazz education and engagement programmes in the UK and Australia. Find out more, here.
Deeply inspired by the swing and fluency of Ray Brown and enamoured with Charlie Haden’s lyricism, Greg bought his first double bass in 2006. After moving to London in 2010 to pursue an international music career, he enrolled in a BA Jazz and Middlesex University in 2012, graduating in 2014 with First Class Honours and receiving the Dean’s Academic Excellence Award. That same year he started a Masters by Research in ‘Back-to-front’ Bassists: Idiodextrous Approaches to the Double Bass in Jazz, which he completed with Merit in 2016.
